• PROFESSOR ROOT: Brian Root has been named president of Def Jam University, a division of Kellwood Co. Most recently, Root served as senior vice president of private brands and new business for Salant Corp., a division of Perry Ellis International. A veteran of the apparel industry for more than 10 years, he has successfully directed the growth and development of new brands, including Ocean Pacific Sportswear and JNCO Tops. Root oversees development of Def Jam University for young men and juniors. He’s based in New York, reporting to Paul Robb, president of Kellwood Menswear.

  • SAMUELS’ NEW PLAN:Bankrupt Samuels Jewelers Inc. Friday said it has filed its reorganization plan with a Delaware bankruptcy court, which would allow it to emerge from Chapter 11 after Christmas and restructure $78 million in debt. The plan provides for the conversion of a significant portion of the chain’s debt to equity. Samuels, whose 113 retail stores in 19 states have remained open during the bankruptcy, also sells jewelry online at samuelsjewelers.com.

  • FOSSIL’S NEW HIRE: Fossil has tapped Steve Bock as president of its luxury division, a new post. The Richardson, Tex.-based firm’s luxury unit includes the Zodiac brand and the licensed Emporio Armani and Burberry lines. Bock, who starts on Sept. 2, joins from Avon, where he was president of retail. Before Avon, Bock worked in management at several retailers, including Saks Fifth Avenue, where he was an executive vice president and general merchandise manager, and Sephora, where he headed the merchant group at the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton division.
