WAL-MART RESULTS: Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Saturday released its estimates for January, saying same-store sales at U.S. stores rose 2.2 percent as shoppers cashed in their holiday gift cards. Results for the five-week period from Dec. 30 through Feb. 2 looked more promising than past months, when sales at Wal-Mart rose 1.6 percent in December and decreased 0.1 percent in November. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart's rival, Target Corp., said January sales at stores open for one year or more grew between 3.5 percent and 5.5 percent. Wal-Mart will report its final January sales figures on Thursday.
ROSSIGNOL TAPS GARCIA: Quiksilver Inc. has hired Jose M. Garcia as general manager for Rossignol soft goods for North America. Garcia comes from Columbia Sportswear Co., where he spent nine years, most recently as outerwear merchandise manager. Before that, he worked as senior designer at Fila for three years. In this new post, Garcia is based at the new mountain headquarters of Quiksilver and Rossignol in Park City, Utah. He reports to François Goulet, president of Rossignol Group North America.
