WINNING AD: Chanel’s glamorous ad campaign for its No. 5 fragrance won the top prize in the media category at France’s 18th annual Phoenix awards. The ceremony, held in Paris on Wednesday by the Union of Advertisers, lauded the campaign’s audacity and innovative use of classic media such as TV. The two-minute TV commercial, helmed by “Moulin Rouge” director Baz Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman, was the climax of a long teaser campaign. Following the commercial’s release, the ad hit cinemas, billboards and magazines. The Phoenix awards recognize France’s most innovative communications campaigns in a variety of categories, including media, p.r. and events management. Entries are selected by professionals working in each of the categories.
DIESEL ADS: Diesel said Thursday that ER27, a Paris-based ad agency, would take over its account. KesselsKramer of Amsterdam had handled its advertising. ER27 is a division of Suresnes, France-based Havas, a $1.86 billion advertising conglomerate. Diesel said KesselsKramer, which had handled Diesel since 2001, would continue to work on its 55DSL subbrand. ER27’s first campaign for Diesel will break in August.
QUIKSILVER’S AUSSIE BUY: Quiksilver has purchased Surfection, an Australian retailer that operates 12 stores — seven Surfection shops and five Quiksilver/Roxy units. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Surfection will become part of the firm’s Boardriders Club group, and five of the seven Surfection stores will be converted to Quiksilver Boardriders Club units. Chris Athas, owner of the Surfection Group, will take on an executive role at Quiksilver as retail director for Asia Pacific.
