The floral bounty of spring and summer may have ended, but a hostess still has to adorn her dinner table. Magnolia Flowers owner Angelica Gomes recommends deco mums, most plentiful in the fall. “This is the mum,” she says from her New York City boutique, “not some cheesy mum you’d find in a Korean deli.” Indeed, the lush bloom flowers in rich shades ranging from green early in the season to deep burgundy to solid chartreuse later on (with a velvety cream falling somewhere in between). In arrangements, Gomes prefers to let the flower, which is imported from Holland, stand alone or pair it with equally autumnal oak leaves. The resulting look can appear pretty rock ’n’ roll, as evidenced when Gomes used deco mums in tall copper vases for MTV’s Video Music Awards.
