NEW YORK — The patchwork trend, the textures and handmade qualities of the fall runways notwithstanding, an informal poll of designer businesses shows that the looks that got the most play for the season with editorial placements and retail interest are ones that evoke a casually refined air: chunky cashmere sweaters, suede blouses and subtly embellished coats. Price was not an issue.
Designers also said editorial coverage melded closely with retail interest this season, as evidenced by Calvin Klein’s black hammered silk cut-out dress, a sleeveless version of which is expected to appear on the cover of the August InStyle, worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, while stores went wild for a similar style with long sleeves.
