NEW YORK — Weakness in the broader equity markets Monday didn’t miss retail as investors kicked off the unofficial start to autumn on a decidedly down note.

Retailers across the broadline spectrum felt the pain with Dillard’s falling 96 cents, or 3.9 percent, to $23.60; Kohl’s, $2.71, or 3.9 percent, to $67.01; Sears, Roebuck, $1.61, or 3.5 percent, to $43.90; Federated, 75 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $35.15; J.C. Penney, 36 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $17; Neiman Marcus, 51 cents, or 1.8 percent, to $28.69; May Co., 50 cents, or 1.7 percent, to $28.83, and Nordstrom, 14 cents, or 0.7 percent, to 19.19. Saks ran counter to trend with a 14 cent, or 1.3 percent, uptick to $10.76.
