NEW YORK — Subway rides might become a little more pleasant for those who harbor a special interest in fashion and accessories.

As part of the subway’s 100th anniversary this year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, New York City Transit and the New York Transit Museum are joining forces with the Council of Fashion Designers of America for “Fashion Underground: Subway-Inspired Accessories.” The project features one-of-a-kind accessories created by nine CFDA designers and inspired by the subway, and the MTA will issue 700,000 MetroCards displaying information on each of the designers, as well as 1.5 million MetroCards with tidbits about the CFDA.

The participating designers are Kenneth Cole, Lambertson Truex, Stephen Dweck, Colette Malouf, Judith Ripka, Simon Alcantara, Matt Murphy, Gerard Yosca and Michael Simon. Cole designed leather boots with MetroCard pockets, and Malouf created a necklace made of token charms. Lambertson Truex created a wallet with an exterior MetroCard pocket, and Stephen Dweck designed a charm bracelet of tokens.

Other designers took the inspiration less literally. Simon’s handbag, for instance, drew from the mosaics at Lexington Avenue station, while Murphy sought inspiration from the mosaics at the 23rd Street station.

The pieces will be presented Thursday at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Station and exhibited there Feb. 4-27. During that time, they will be available through a silent auction at mta.info.com that will benefit the New York Transit Museum.
