UNDERFASHION INTERNS: The Underfashion Club recently met to celebrate the successful completion of student internships at companies involved in intimate apparel retailing, manufacturing, material supply and service support to the trade.

The event at 42 East 33rd Street in New York was hosted by Janet Malecki, president of the Underfashion Club; the organization’s internship co-chairman, Virgil Simons, and Phyllis Frankfort Perillo, president of the Working In Support of Education organization. The Underfashion Club sponsors the internship program.

Distribution of certificates and $500 stipends were distributed to each of the interns by Simons and Walter Costello, president of the Intimate Apparel Square Club. Four high school students were awarded scholarships of $3,500 each to continue their education in a variety of fields, including design and merchandising.

Four supervisor and intern presentations spotlighted Oksana Gutkina of James Madison High School and Terri Harris of St. Eve International; Emily Volaski of the High School of Fashion Industries and Linda Hyde of Wacoal America; Kate DiCicco of The Beacon High School and Janine Eisenman of Dana-Co, and Marisa Valdez of Walton High School and Jodi Cohen of Lunaire.

Other interns who successfully completed the internship programs are: Dushane Noble, Michelle Zenshman and Daisy Tam at Carole Hochman Designs; Alicia Thomas at Lady Ester Lingerie; Cyndi Pierre and Narobi Melendez at Action Wear Fabrics; Cynthia Diaz and Rashum Jawaid at Bamboo Inc.; Donna Marie Lewellyn at Bestform Intimates; Maria Freitas and Kavita Kallu at Charles Komar & Sons; Elizabeth Amber Huey at Dogi USA; Ngozi Uganobo at Klauber Bros.; Aleris Mendoza at Fawn Creations; Shiomara Arroyo at Milco; Felicia Konopka at Makuba; Svetlana Mishchuk at S&S Industries; Amy Lee at St. Eve International, and Janean Fraser and Jennifer Taves of St. Eve Kids.

In addition to the $500 stipends and an opportunity to apply for a $3,500 scholarship, other benefits in the internship program include a one-term unpaid internship opportunity in the intimate-apparel industry, certificates of completion, an opportunity for a letter of recommendation and potential for a paid summer internship.

Other participating companies in the internship program include Playtex Apparel, NAP Intimates and Flora Nikrooz.

INTIMATE BOATING: More than 50 innerwear executives turned out at an annual summer boat party on the Cloud Nine yacht at the Skyport Marina in Manhattan. The event was hosted by The Underfashion Club and the Goodfellowship Corset Club. This year’s theme was a "Salute to America & New York." A highlight was a close-up of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

PLAYING SAFE: A new product promoting safe sex will be available Aug. 1 at a suggested retail of $14: the Play Safe Thong. Created by Caren Martineau, the thong was designed for a "young woman on a date, at a party, at a club — wherever she likes to have fun," said Martineau.

The cotton and Lycra spandex thong features a "discreetly positioned pocket" sewn into a back panel that is sized to carry a single condom. Martineau said it’s also a convenient place to store currency or a key.

Among the reasons she designed the specialized item are "a woman shouldn’t have to succumb to passion if it endangers her health," and because "women care to make fashion statements in thongs and condoms."

The thongs will be available in three prints with contrasting elastic trim: bright stripes, a floral motif and a cheetah pattern. Solid black will also be featured. Details on distribution can be obtained at Info@playsafethong.com.
