NEW YORK — Marc Jacobs will join the big boys in Milan next month.
He’ll present part of his spring-summer 1995 collection during fashion week there. The show is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m., and will be held in Miuccia Prada’s showroom space on Via Maffei, 4.
Jacobs confirmed the news Friday from his hotel room in Riccione, Italy, near Iceberg’s factories, where he had been working. Jacobs is a design consultant to Iceberg, which is produced and marketed by Gilmar SpA, an apparel manufacturer based in San Giovanni Marignano.
Jacobs said he was invited to participate in the show by Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Italian Vogue.
“There’s going to be a big Vogue celebration, and she [Sozzani] asked if I would be willing to show part of my collection in Italy,” said Jacobs.
Jacobs noted that his partner, Robert Duffy, has also been in Italy negotiating with Gilmar to assume worldwide distribution of Jacobs’s collection. If a deal materializes, it would become effective with the fall 1995 collection, said Jacobs.
“My relationship with Iceberg and the people at Gilmar is they want to get involved with us and want to help us. We’re talking help wherever we can get it,” he said.
Gilmar declined to comment on the negotiations.
Jacobs said he wasn’t sure who’s footing the bill for the Milan fashion show.
“The one person I know who can’t pay for it is me,” he said.
Gilmar is producing the knitwear for Jacobs’s show, as well as for his spring distribution. Gilmar will also produce some woven samples for the show, but the actual wovens production will be done in New York by Jacobs’s firm.
Jacobs said Friday he would still present a fashion show in New York, although it would be independent of the Council of Fashion Designers of America presentations. He is no longer a member of the CDFA.
As for the Gilmar affiliation, he said: “It would be very exciting for me as a company to be associated with a European factory. The quality is good and they have worldwide distribution. In a way, this [the show] is a test as to whether this is valid for us. “I like showing in New York. [But] for the future of our company, and the plans to do a deal with them, it’s important for us to do it. We’ll try it. You never know until you try.”
