NEW YORK — For the past few seasons, Gilles Mendel has been slipping a few ready-to-wear looks into his J. Mendel fur collection. The lineup he showed for spring, however, struck a balance between the two, with furs accenting much of the sportswear and dresses, especially as shrugs worn over printed chiffon or monotoned jersey dresses. Certainly there were also his innovative fur coats — a skinny mink backed with stretch chiffon or an ivory sable reversing to silk floral. But the best pieces were the simplest, as in the beige suede wrapped coat or the perfectly cut blush mink.
