Laid-back dressing is a way of life from coast to coast, and teenagers work the formula better than most. WWD decided to take a look at what constitutes casual, as defined by teens in two of the country’s fashion capitals: New York and L.A. The results? Perhaps more similar than you’d think. In either city, the foundation is decidedly denim, with low-rise jeans leaving plenty of room for Britneyesque displays of skin. Skirts go either knee-length and full or skinny mini. In L.A., the trendy sweatsuit soldiers on in candy colors, whereas New York teens tended toward a slightly dressier look. Both coasts showed a preference for snug-fitting T-shirts and seriously sized bags: either boxy and ladylike or slouchy and slung across one shoulder.
