When Michelle Dudley moved to New York to pursue a career in knitwear design, she had no idea she would end up in the denim business.

Dudley, who graduated with a degree in fashion design and merchandising from Drexel University, moved from Pittsburgh to Manhattan to begin her design career. After working in sweater design for Tommy Hilfiger and Liz Claiborne, Dudley decided to launch her own line of one-of-a-kind knits bearing her own name. This season, Dudley’s collection is all about denim.

“Denim is just so hot right now,” she said. “So I wanted to incorporate it somewhere in my designs.”

Pieces in the collection combine the twill fabric with cashmere, angora and mohair to create chunky sweaters, skirts and cold weather accessories. Dudley also custom dyes the knits to work with denim to include rich blues mixed with white.

Dudley said that with a wholesale price range from $175 to $1,000, she expects to reach $150,000 in sales by the end of the year.
