PARIS — L’Oréal is bringing a new dimension to hair care.
The French beauty giant has teamed up with French software applications provider Dassault Systemes to create a magnified, 3-D rendition of a hair follicle that can be used for educational and research purposes.
"Historical cuts have been performed with [two-dimensional] tools, and it has not been possible to visualize, manipulate or modify at will in space the different elements of the follicle," said Bruno Bernard, project director of hair biology research at L’Oréal, in a statement.
The 3-D virtual follicle attained through CATIA V5 technology allows researchers to visualize from all angles the multiple layers of each strand of hair.
So far, L’Oréal has no plans to use the technology to develop specific products, but intends to use the virtual strands as a means to increase its knowledge of hair.
