Alber Elbaz took Lanvin in an intriguing new direction for spring, offering a très sexy rendition of the season’s futuristic look and a high-minded take on tough chic.
Elbaz has always had a fascination for novel fabrics and he must have clocked some serious time in the stalls of Première Vision to find these. Everything seemed to glow, from glistening spliced minidresses to a black trench that looked slicked with crude oil.
Making a transition from fall’s pretty pleats and tulle, short dresses curled with tight plissé bands or cut with gladiator skirts opened the show. All manner of lightly industrial fare followed, including dresses gussied up with metal snaps, zippered pockets or simple epaulets.
As ever, Elbaz’s tailoring was precise and his imagination sharp. And while the deep-space/high-tech experiment didn’t always pay off (as with parachute pantsuits), more often than not, Elbaz’s mysteriously glossy findings were out of this world.
