NEW YORK — “The Oprah Winfrey Show” special on Ralph Lauren was clearly just a warm-up.
On Oct. 24, Lauren and Winfrey will reunite, this time onstage at Lincoln Center as part of a multifaceted invitation-only gala evening to benefit both The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. During the event, titled Lincoln Center Presents: An Evening with Ralph Lauren, Winfrey will serve as the host and lead a conversation with the designer to offer a look into his life, as well as his career that has spanned more than four decades.
“I am so proud to have my dear friend Oprah join me onstage for this special evening to celebrate and support two important New York organizations, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts,” Lauren said.
The evening will start with a reception, followed by the chat between Winfrey and Lauren at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, which will be produced by Darren Bagert, who has several Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards under his belt. The following gala dinner, at Avery Fisher Hall, will serve to underscore Lincoln Center’s growing ties to the fashion community, from New York Fashion Week to other events throughout the year, such as the CFDA Awards.
“When Lincoln Center embraced Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we fully anticipated that fashion and design would, over time, become a more enduring and visible part of the creative spectrum at Lincoln Center, meaning that we would have events throughout the year,” said Reynold Levy, president of Lincoln Center. “That is beginning to come to pass in a whole variety of ways which will unfold over time.”
Having the designer at Lincoln Center for this occasion was a natural move. “Mr. Lauren is well known to many members of Lincoln Center’s board, and he has been to Lincoln Center fairly frequently, including at CFDA events,” Levy added. “[The Ralph Lauren Corp.] has also been a very generous supporter of Lincoln Center’s redevelopment efforts. The idea of joining forces to do something very special that would help The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in a meaningful way seemed a natural extension of that relationship.”
Fighting cancer has been a key cause for Lauren for more than two decades. He contributed to the establishment of the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research at Georgetown University Medical Center, designed the first logo for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer and created the Pink Pony Campaign in 2000. He created the Cancer Center in Harlem in 2003.
The evening at Lincoln Center is being made possible by the support of American Express, Condé Nast and Hearst Corp.
