LIM College Trio Gets Cotton Inc. Scholarships

NEW YORK — Three students have been named winners of the Cotton Inc.-LIM College student textile pattern design contest.

Deanna Rowe, a junior majoring in fashion merchandising, won for her stripe pattern; Nicole Clonan, a junior majoring in marketing, was acknowledged for her plaid pattern, and Nicole Powell, a junior majoring in fashion merchandising, won for her print pattern.

Using a grant from the Importer Support Program of the Cotton Board and with supervision from Cotton Inc., LIM College’s Fashion Merchandising Department challenged its students to create original plaid, stripe and print fabric patterns using LIM College’s official colors of purple, red and lavender. Each of the winners receives a $1,500 scholarship to LIM College.

“The Importer Support Program is designed to foster education throughout the textile supply chain,” said Mark Messura, Cotton Inc. senior vice president of global supply chain marketing. “The scholarship recipients exhibited a level of creative sophistication that is a credit to LIM College and bodes well for the future of textile design in general.”

For this scholarship competition, more than 150 students in LIM College’s Computer Aided Design classes each created a signature plaid, stripe and print pattern. After judging by a panel of faculty and administrators, five finalists in each category were selected. Images of those 15 patterns were posted on the LIM College Web site, where all students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to vote for their favorite in each category and determine the winners.

During the current fall semester, students in LIM College’s Product Development classes will take the three winning patterns and create tech packs, with students determining the best uses for the winning designs. Samples of the selected products will then be produced, with the ultimate goal of having the students’ work manufactured and sold in the LIM College bookstore.
