Can downtown Dallas be revitalized? Metropolitan, a loft-like bar and restaurant, is the latest evidence that a platoon of entrepreneurs thinks it can. Situated on Main Street about a block from Neiman Marcus, Metropolitan aims to be a neighborhood hangout for people who work downtown or live in the ever-growing number of lofts nearby. Its chief appeal is architectural: the 1896 brick building features towering 15-foot tall windows, exposed brick walls, hardwood floors and a charming patio on a quiet pedestrian side street.

Owners Joe Tillotson, Richard Winfield and Scott Cecil restored the building and reconfigured it to two stories instead of three, creating an airy ambience. Patrons have a choice of the outdoor patio, a few tables near the bar downstairs, or the main dining room on the second level.

Metropolitan opened over the summer and quickly became a popular spot for after-work drinks among Neiman Marcus employees. Open for lunch and dinner, the most popular entrees are prime rib ($21) and seared ahi tuna ($16). Its signature drink is an orange rum confection mixed with orange liquor and cranberry juice and served straight up in a martini glass. 1525 Main Street, (214) 977-9205.
