PARIS — MAC is bringing a couture touch to its color cosmetics.

In April, the brand will introduce a limited-edition makeup palette containing the hues used in Lebanese designer Elie Saab’s most recent spring-summer couture collection.

“It’s a creative exercise, not about volume,” said John Demsey, MAC’s president. “[The project] reinforces our relationship with and our commitment to Elie Saab and sends the message that this is something we believe in.”

MAC has a long-established link with fashion, but up until now only created single, limited-edition items for designers in the ready-to-wear realm. For Lawrence Steele, for example, MAC concocted an eye shadow, and a lipstick for Heatherette.

For the Saab project, MAC is creating 1,000 units of the makeup palettes — slim, black compacts containing two powder blushes, four eye shadows and two lipsticks — all in golden, brown and beige tones. Each is contained in a brown velvet pouch.

They will be available in 15 doors altogether, in France — where they will sell for $47.20 at current exchange rates — and the Mideast. “Elie Saab has a huge presence in the Middle East, and it’s an important emerging market for MAC,” added Demsey.

He said more such projects are possible in the future.
