So what does Bob Mackie think about Los Angeles Fashion Week? The master of show biz was on hand Friday night at the California Market Center to kick off “Inside the Designer’s Studio,” a new lecture series sponsored by the CMC and longtime tenant Otis College of Art & Design.

“I would think it’s a really good thing. I’d always hoped the L.A. fashion scene would rise up and be very important,” he said at a cocktail party before the talk.
“I’ve never been part of the New York fashion scene, and I’ve never been part of L.A.’s. I’m just this weird sort of maverick who does show business and fashion and furniture and you name it. But I’ve always been a big booster of California fashion because this is where I started.”
Mackie continues running business here, including the home furnishings division, which launched in 2001, a line for QVC and another sold through Chadwick’s and J.C. Penney catalogs. And he’s mentored at Otis for 20 years.
More than 400 fans turned out for the lecture, a kind of play off Bravo TV’s well-known “Inside the Actors Studio,” with Otis fashion director Rosemary Brantley serving as interviewer and accompanied by a video featuring Mackie’s best-known clients, including Cher, Elton John and Mitzi Gaynor. The last segment spotlighted the designer’s collaboration with Mattel. Five Mackie-clad Barbies were auctioned off with proceeds benefitting the school.
“Hopefully, they’ll continue doing the series,” said Mackie. “There’s a lot to be learned from us old guys.”
