New York and the attitude generally associated with “an urban setting — the romance, practicality and reality of city dressing,” was how Madewell head of design Somsack Sikhounmuong approached the fall collection, creating a look of soft, relaxed layers for the season. It was full of trends — cozy knits, loosened-up and distressed jeans and robust outerwear — tailored to Madewell’s DIY, denim-driven ethos.

Jeans came in a dark rinse or ultrableached with higher rises and easier fits, an evolution of the super skinny cut that’s prevailed of late. Leather jackets cinched at the waist worn over languid skirts provided a moment of citified femininity. But the majority of the collection was anchored in casual tomboy appeal with oversize sweaters and great jackets, such as a fuzzy bomber fleece and a plaid barn jacket paired with chunky flats and sneakers — the shoe of the season, which Madewell made a play for with collaborations with Vans and Saucony.
