Kin Ying Lee, Madewell’s head of design, said she was thinking about the contrast between quiet nature and something more high energy for spring. So she took the brand’s laid-back core — jeans, gauzy shirts, Ts and cardigans — and gave them a graphic boost with geometric patterns — a polkadot skirt, black-and-white striped trousers — and flashes of “synthetic” tones such as purple, turquoise and acid yellow and green.
