PORTLAND, Ore. — There are eight steps involved in woolen manufacturing and turning fleece into fashion:
Grading and sorting the raw wool
Scouring or cleaning the wool
Recovering lanolin, a greasy by-product of wool
Carding, a process where wool fibers are combed into a finesheet or web, which is then divided into thin, continuous strands called roving
As a vertical company, Pendleton owns and operates nine production and distribution facilities, including three woolen mills, located in various locales in Oregon, Washington, Nebraska and New Hampshire. About 50 percent of Pendleton’s wool comes from the U.S., including Oregon wool producers who have supplied Pendleton for several generations. Australia is the world’s dominant wool producer, and the majority of raw wool purchased by Pendleton comes from there.
Thanks to the musical group The Beach Boys, Pendleton has woven a place in American pop culture. The group was originally called The Pendletones and always wore Pendleton plaid shirts during concerts.
