California’s new governor, who returned to the seat after 36 years this week, appears to have lost his edge over the years, wearing his suits a few sizes too big now, in the style of the typical American male slouch. Back in the Seventies, when he was known as Governor Moonbeam, he channeled the Italian Riviera gigolo look without losing his Sixties psychedelic hangover. “He’s well aware of the need to project a somber, serious political image. Now he’s married and part of a very austere and more conservative era in American politics,” said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a senior fellow at the University of California’s School of Policy, Planning and Development.
