NEW YORK -- Marilyn Kaplan, who was president of A Line Anne Klein until a year ago, has returned to SA as part owner, president and chief executive officer of Ciaosport.Kaplan, along with two silent partners -- whom she declined to name -- inked the deal on the better-to-bridge sportswear firm here, two weeks ago. It will be final this Thursday.Kaplan said she had been working on the deal for several months. She declined to reveal the terms.Stuart Roth, from whom Kaplan purchased Ciaosport, said he plans to devote more time and energy to his position as national chairman of the Alzheimer's Association."I'll also probably spend a certain amount of time doing nothing," he said. "Then I might take on another field other than apparel."Kaplan has been active in both retailing and manufacturing. She was with Neiman Marcus in Dallas for 12 years and served as a senior vice president and general merchandise manager. In 1987 she relocated to New York, where she was president of Gene Ewing/BIS, a casual sportswear concern, for three years. She spent the next two years as president of Charlotte Neuville, a sportswear firm, before her two-year tenure at A Line.Kaplan described the 20-year-old Ciaosport as a good, stable firm with great survival ability, but "certainly in great need of a shot in the arm, which I intend to administer."Kaplan noted she has already hired Nani Soong to head a team of designers. Previously, Soong was a designer at Adrienne Vittadini Collection."We're not looking for a revolution here," said Kaplan. "But simply to update the look. It will be modern, wearable and affordable sportswear."Kaplan said that wholesale volume stands at $10 million, and she plans to increase it by 25 to 30 percent annually.
