LIM ON PBS: The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising — the 63-year-old Manhattan college for the business of fashion — is the subject of a Public Broadcasting Service segment about the school’s niche educational programs. PBS released the three-minute spot nationally last week.
The program includes interviews with high-profile alumni, such as Nautica corporate merchandising manager John Conte, Revlon product development manager Lori Orlowski, former college president Adrian Marcuse and current president Elizabeth Marcuse. It also takes a look inside classrooms at the recently renovated campus on East 53rd Street.
Parts of the PBS program will be used in a promotional tape to recruit high school students at college fairs and on the school’s Web site. “Because our facility is small, students receive personal attention by some of the most experienced professionals in the industry,” said Elizabeth Marcuse. “We’re fortunate to have these experts in LIM classrooms.”
Starting with the fall semester this year, LIM will offer a bachelor of business administration in visual merchandising.
“The BBA in visual merchandising exposes students to an in-depth analysis of the retail store environment,” said Eric Feigenbaum, visual merchandising department chair. “Students will be introduced to the principles, philosophies and technologies of visual merchandising through first-hand exploration of the market and classroom experimentation.”
MUSIC TO MY SLEEVES: Burton Snowboards and Apple Computer Inc. showed off the first jacket equipped for an iPod digital music player, which stores up to 4,000 songs, at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco earlier this month.
Made of Gore-Tex, the $500 Burton Amp has a flexible control panel on the sleeve for the wearer to switch songs or adjust the volume. There is a chest pocket for an iPod, which retails between $300 and $500 and must be purchased separately. The waterproof, machine-washable jacket is available at apple.com and at Apple’s freestanding stores. Later this month, it also will be offered at select Burton dealers.
FIT’S ALUMNI SALUTE: Alex Garfield, co-founder of Garfield & Marks and president and chief executive officer of Go Silk and Sunnex, will be honored at the Fashion Institute of Technology Alumni Association’s Alumni Star Salute on Feb. 4.
The annual fund-raiser, held at the Rainbow Room this year, honors FIT alumni who have made significant contributions to their industries. Other honorees this year are William H. Frake III, senior concept designer of Blue Sky Studios, who most recently worked on the film “Ice Age,” and Amy Handkammer, vice president of product development and merchandising at New Line Cinema, who most recently worked on aspects of brand licensing for “Lord of the Rings.”
