NEW YORK — Puma is teaming up with provocative designer Alexander McQueen for its latest collaborative collection.
The McQueen and Puma women’s and men’s footwear, yet to be named, will be unveiled in London during that city’s fashion week in September and will hit stores for spring 2006, the German activewear giant said.
The move follows the quick success of the new Adidas Stella McCartney collection. Alexander McQueen and McCartney are both owned by Gucci Group, which has pledged to make these businesses profitable by 2007.
“Alexander McQueen is one of the most creative minds in fashion, and his collaboration with Puma will make his work accessible to a broader customer,” Jochen Zeitz, Puma’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
Details of the collection were not revealed, and company executives were unavailable for comment.
McQueen has been stepping up his offerings of handbags and for fall is launching his first complete accessories line. The brand also has a licensed footwear collection produced by Sergio Rossi. Jonathan Akeroyd, McQueen’s new chief executive officer, said recently that the goal is to build handbags and footwear to represent about 30 percent of the house’s total sales in three years.
Puma, meanwhile, has been steadily growing its roster of lines made in collaboration with big-name designers and celebrities. It now has jointly produced collections with Christy Turlington, Neil Barrett, Mihara Yasuhiro, Philippe Starck and Alexander von Stubbe. Puma opened its first store for its collaborative lines in February in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
Other big-name designers have also been linking up with sport firms. Emilio Pucci is making skiwear for Rossignol, while Yohji Yamamoto also has a deal with Adidas.
