Gabe Doppelt is joining MTV Tuesday, and has reportedly been hired to develop home shopping programs for MTV, VH-1 and Nickelodeon. Sources say the cable channel is undergoing a six-month test in the home shopping arena, and may develop half-hour shopping programs. Doppelt resigned in October as editor-in-chief of Mademoiselle. An MTV Networks spokeswoman said, "We do not comment on personnel matters," but added, "We have been considering programming related to home shopping, which would be a natural for us."
The beleaguered Styles of the Times section of the Sunday New York Times is changing again. This time, it's adding color. Beginning in late February or early March, the Styles section will add color to various features, which will push up deadlines for much of the section, sometimes as much as a week to 10 days. The Times already features color in some other Sunday sections, including Travel, the Book Review and Real Estate.
GUESS WHO'S PUBLISHING?
It's no secret that Paul Marciano, president of Guess, loves magazines -- just look at his media buy. Now he's offering one himself, called Guess Journal. Marciano said he'll publish three to four times a year and distribute to retailers and customers around the world. He hopes to sell it on newsstands eventually for $3. The journal showcases current Guess products, prices and store locations. Some 120,000 copies of the first issue were printed. But Marciano told WWD, "I have no ambitions for it to become a magazine, but I hope it will be something people will look forward to." The premiere issue features Bridget Hall, who had been pegged as the next "Guess girl." But Marciano was peeved at Hall's appearances in Ralph Lauren and Pepe campaigns, so, he said, it's on to the next girl. Guess Journal features an eclectic group of stories and photographs, ranging from recycling and the environment to "Beverly Hills: 24 Hours in the City of Glamour" (complete with hotel and restaurant listings). It also features the current Guess ad campaign."It's a tool of assistance for all our licensees," said Marciano. Right now the only ads are from Guess and its licensees, but Marciano said it could potentially carry others "that blend with Guess."ANDERSEN FILE
"I have some thoughts [about fashion coverage], but they're not specific enough to announce the Andersen Doctrine," said Kurt Andersen, who was named editor of New York magazine this week. Anderson said, however, he'd like New York's fashion coverage to become more reportorial. "It's a business full of rich stories and is important to the city. I don't think I see enough of it in New York [magazine]." Andersen said he'll do "whatever it takes" to bring that coverage to the magazine. The former editor-at-large at Time magazine begins Feb. 7.
Amy Astley has been named beauty editor of Vogue, a new post. She had been Vogue's beauty associate since early last year. It's widely speculated that Astley will take over many of the responsibilities of beauty director Shirley Lord, who is moving into "new media," which involves various electronic publishing projects.
Sources say Chanel wants Uma Thurman to become its next fragrance model, but no deal has been signed. Jean Hoehn Zimmerman, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Chanel, declined comment but did say the company is looking at several ad agencies in the U.S. and France to handle a women's fragrance project.
STOLI WITH A TWIST
Will fashion and lifestyle magazines benefit from Michel Roux's new liaison -- Stolichnaya vodka? Hopefully, say publishers.Beginning Feb. 1, Roux will give up distribution rights to Absolut, which he helped build into the nation's best-selling imported vodka, and take on Stolichnaya. While it's still too early to talk about his ad plans, Roux said he'll continue to help artists, designers, writers and composers. "I'm not saying I'll do the same advertising that I did with Absolut, but I will involve artists and fashion designers." Roux said he'll be reviewing ad agencies in February, "and then we'll start fresh."
In yet another fashion show shuffle, @elleryland is moving its show in sync with the Paris couture calendar — though the brand is still keeping one foot on the city’s ready-to-wear schedule. Their runway show in January will coincide with the launch of a new strategy: designing two main collections each year instead of four, which will then be released in four drops. “As we all know, the system needs to change. We need to show sooner to give time back to artisans and designers to do what they do best — create,” said founder Kym Ellery. #wwdnews #wwdfashion (📷: @kukukuba)
@maxmara’s classic 101801 coat was the cornerstone of its pre-fall 2018 collection. The design team expanded the traditional double-breasted, kimono-sleeved style into a trapeze coat, lean belted styles and a peacoat and presented them in monochromatic looks – like the camel one pictured here. #wwdfashion #prefall18 (📷: George Chinsee)
The @cfda has shifted the dates of #NYFW, with Men’s showing on February 5 through February 7, and Women’s will directly follow, running from February 8 through 14. The preliminary schedule will be released on the CFDA’s web site in the next few days, but Mark Beckham, VP of marketing for the CFDA, revealed that @rafsimons will be back to close the men’s-specific part of the week with a show on February 7 #wwdfashion (📷: Kelly Taub)

How does a “regular, degular, schmegular” girl from the Bronx, N.Y., become a Grammy-nominated artist with a certified platinum record in less than a year? Call it the @iamcardib come up. The 25-year-old has become a musical sensation, and the fashion world is taking note. “If I could describe her style I would say drama. She’s really into the dramatics,” says Cardi B’s stylist @kollincarter. See how Carter styles her bold and out there looks with the link in bio. #wwdfashion
“There is no formula. There is no guideline. I can watch Ted Talks all day, but there is no one who can advise me on exactly what it is I should be doing,” said @ronniefieg, CEO of @kith, in an interview with WWD’s @ariahughes at the brand’s new SoHo office in Manhattan. Head to WWD.com to see how Fieg went from hanging out in shoe stockrooms at 13 to building his own business. #wwdfashion (📷: @weston.wells)
@fearofgod and @maxfieldla have teamed up on a pop-up installation. The store, located in the gallery space across from Maxfield’s Melrose Ave location, is the site of the brand’s House of God pop-up in which Fear of God founder @jerrylorenzo has created a church-inspired installation. A dozen vintage church pews sit in front of an LED screen playing 90s gospel singers in an effort to re-create an environment akin to a Southern Baptist Church, Lorenzo explained. Known for his sleek, sophisticated American glamour, Norman Norell is the subject of an upcoming exhibition at @fitnyc. “Norell: Dean of American Fashion,” which runs from February 9 through April 14, will feature approximately 100 ensembles and accessories. His best work is exemplified by the designer’s glittering “mermaid” gowns frosted with thousands of hand-sewn sequins – like the one pictured. (📷: William Helburn) #wwdfashion
For pre-fall 2018, @balmain didn’t let go of the glitz. A crystal embroidered baseball jacket priced at around $40,000 hangs in the “couture” section of the brand’s first men’s pre-collection. Sporting the words “Balmain Army” across the back, the item took around two months to make. “When it was completed, it was like Christmas, it was like, ‘It’s done, it’s exactly what I wanted,’” said Balmain’s creative director @olivier_rousteing during a tour of the collection in a Paris showroom on Monday. #wwdfashion
