Mexx Deal In Europe

BERLIN — Mexx, a division of Liz Claiborne, has signed a licensing agreement with the Schiesser Group of Zug, Switzerland for the design, production and marketing of Mexx beachwear, underwear and sleepwear for women, men and children in Europe and the Middle East.

The previous license with the Dutch producer Iduna, which filed for bankruptcy last month, has been terminated. The spring 2004 collection is under development and will be presented to the trade in August and September.

Nigel Moss, group marketing director of Mexx International, explained that when the company was confronted with Iduna’s financial difficulties, Mexx made it possible for Iduna to deliver its orders for the winter 2003 season.

“For the future, however, we looked into alternatives in order to continue and further develop Mexx Body & Beach in our core markets of Benelux, France and Germany.”

Schiesser is one of Europe’s leading producers of branded underwear.

Moss declined to divulge the sales of the Mexx Body & Beach range, but said that under the new partnership, the company expects to expand this business geographically. “Germany is Schiesser’s core market, and our single largest market as well, so we expect to grow our Body & Beach business there in particular,” he said. “On the production side, we also want to develop sleepwear, which is new for us.”
