The fashion and media communities on Saturday lost a longtime pillar with the death of Michael Steven Cannon, former editor at large and men’s fashion editor at Town & Country magazine.
The cause of death was complications due to multiple systems atrophy, a progressive neurological disorder. He was 53.
Cannon was Town & Country’s first-ever men’s fashion editor, and oversaw event coverage in the magazine. A spokeswoman for Hearst Corp., which publishes Town & Country, said that Cannon was at the helm of “scores of events and presentations for the magazine.” His sartorial stature was recognized by a spot in the International Best-Dressed List Hall of Fame.
Born in Memphis, Cannon’s first career and love was music, performing as a pianist and singer throughout the Seventies and Eighties. Later, in New York, he turned to men’s fashion and nonprofit work before eventually joining Town & Country, although he continued performing.
The funeral will be in Memphis at the Memorial Park Funeral Home on Aug. 4. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the donor’s charity of choice. A memorial service, planned by both Cannon’s family and his colleagues at Hearst, will be held at Hearst Tower in Manhattan in September.
