NEW YORK — Moving forward with its succession plan, Kohl’s Corp. gave chief executive, Larry Montgomery, the additional title of chairman, succeeding William Kellogg, who retired from day-to-day operations in January 2001.

Kellogg remains on the board and was named presiding director of the nonmanagement board meetings. Montgomery, a 32-year retail veteran, joined the 457-unit Kohl’s in 1988 as senior vice president and director of stores. He was named to the board in 1994, promoted to vice chairman in 1996 and ceo in 1999.

The chain also announced the appointment of Judith Sprieser to the board. Sprieser is president and ceo of Transora Inc., a business-to-business e-marketplace for consumer products. Prior to Transora, Sprieser was ceo of Sara Lee’s Food Group.

Kohl’s also said Herbert Simon retired from its board. Simon is co-chairman of Simon Property Group Inc. and Melvin Simon & Associates Inc.
