NEW YORK — Nordstrom is taking the concept of in-store pampering one step further.

The Seattle-based retailer, which has opened nine in-store spas in 14 years, next spring is slated to open its first freestanding Spa Nordstrom, to be located at The Shops at North Bridge on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. The 3,500-square-foot spa, which will be larger than any of the current in-store spas, will be situated near the North Bridge Nordstrom’s entrance on the third floor.

However, this new format isn’t necessarily part of a larger roll-out plan for the company. "The space became available, so we took advantage of it. We take these opportunities as they come," a Nordstrom spokeswoman said.

In fact, the idea for the free-standing spa came from the John Buck Company — the real estate firm that manages The Shops at North Bridge — which approached the retailer about the space.

"Nordstrom has proven to be the premier retailer on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue," said Lary Herkal, vice president at The John Buck Company and general manager of The Shops at North Bridge. "Expanding in North Bridge through the addition of Spa Nordstrom offers customers an expanded array of quality Nordstrom products and services. This new amenity enhances both North Bridge and the Nordstrom presence in Chicago."

Bob Middlemas, executive vice president and central states regional manager at Nordstrom, stated, "We are very pleased we will soon be able to offer our customers a full-service wellness and day spa conveniently located near our Michigan Avenue store. We hope Spa Nordstrom, with its signature products and treatments, will be an important point of difference as well as a relaxing retreat for customers working, living or visiting downtown."

The next Spa Nordstrom to bow will be an in-store version in the new Houston store, which opens on March 28.
