NEW YORK — Richard Abes, a retired Cotton Incorporated executive, died last week in Bellmore, N.Y., according to the company. He was 73 and had suffered a long illness.

Abes was among the first employees hired by Cotton Inc. when he was named director of home furnishings and industrial marketing in 1970. He retired as senior vice president and assistant to the president in 1995.

He had worked closely with Nick Hahn, Cotton Inc.’s former president.

Hahn said Tuesday, “Dick Abes was an extremely buttoned-up guy. He was a wonderful administrator, knew his job exceedingly well and did it exceedingly well. We was very loyal to Cotton Inc.”

Abes is survived by his wife, Elaine; two daughters, Karen and Lisa, and a son, Jonathan.
