NEW YORK — Elaine Boies, a former fashion editor of The Staten Island Advance, died Sept. 11.

Boies, 67, died of a short illness at Staten Island University Hospital, according to her daughter, Vicki Mavis Boies.

Boies began her career at the Advance in 1971 as a reporter in what is now called the lifestyle section, and later moved to the news department as a general assignment reporter. She eventually became arts editor, but relinquished that post to become an editor on the early morning news desk around the time when she and her husband, Jack, created a professional theater company on Staten Island called the Harbor Repertory Theater, and she felt compelled to step down so it wouldn’t be construed as a conflict of interest. Jack Boies died in 1985.

In 1987, she became the Advance’s fashion editor, a post she held until her retirement two years ago. Her insightful reports on the fashion industry appeared on the Friday Lifestyle cover each week.

A resident of Staten Island, Boies’ hobbies included acting, theater, literature and writing. Following her retirement, Boies did volunteer work for the Staten Island Botanical Garden, Danish Home for the Aged in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., Staten Island Academy, Wagner College and the Bellin Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary in Green Bay, Wis. She was also a docent for the Snug Harbor Cultural Center.

In addition to Vicki, she is survived by another daughter, Lisa Cummings; two sons, Eric and Jason, and five grandchildren.
