NEW YORK — Hazel Haire, a women's fashion designer who often collaborated with her husband, Bill, died Jan. 24 at the Chapin Home in Queens, N.Y. She was 70.
The cause of death was complications from lung disease, said her niece, Margaret Mehran.
Born Hazel Keleher on July 9, 1935, she graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology here in 1955. A year later, she married fashion designer Bill Haire.
She worked at Anita Modes, Grabois, Anne Klein Studio, Beenebag for Geoffrey Beene, B.H. Wragge and Friedricks Sport. She produced her own line, Hazel Haire Ltd., and later teamed with her husband through the Haire Design Studio, where they designed for fashion, uniform and scarf manufacturers.
Haire's heyday was in the Sixties and Seventies, and she and her husband became known as the "Designing Couple" while they were both at Friedricks Sport. She was also an accomplished artist whose paintings were shown in many exhibitions.
In 1976, Haire received FIT's award for Alumni Who Have Made Outstanding Creative and Professional Contributions to the Fashion Industry.
In addition to her niece, Haire is survived by a sister, Jo-Ann McRae.
Etro’s show, titled “The Tree of Life,” was a celebration of the house’s 50th anniversary. “My father founded the company in 1968, which was the year of counterculture and psychedelia. It’s really a show that celebrates that and the paisley design of India and its origin,” said Veronica Etro. #wwdfashion #mfw #ss18 (📷: @delphineachard)
