NEW YORK — Hal Upbin was back on campus 42 years after he graduated from Pace University and credited it for much of his success.
Upbin, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Kellwood Co., said being honored by his alma mater was the highlight of his career.
“It’s that important to me because Pace played a pivotal role in my professional life,” said Upbin at a black-tie dinner April 29 at the Plaza Hotel, where he received Pace’s Leader in Management award and an honorary Doctorate of Commercial Science degree. “I got very much involved in the school and my career while there and learned how you conduct yourself in business. I heard at the time it was a great accounting school and that’s what attracted me to Pace. I’m proud of my career and Pace was certainly the jump-off point for sure.”
Pace president David Caputo said, “Hal epitomizes what we look for [to honor] as someone who’s successful but someone with high ethics, strong reputation and a person who’s known for their trust and who’s known as a leader in their field.”
The event raised more than $400,000 to benefit undergraduate scholarships, as well as the Center for Downtown New York, which was created by Pace in direct response to the Sept. 11 attacks to help with the revitalization of the downtown area.

"I was driving back on Saturday afternoon from the beach, and I just saw this sign saying 'Skydiving for $95.' And I was like, I can't not sky dive for $95," says Tom Bateman about a moment in Hawaii while shooting "Snatched." #wwdeye (📷: @vsteves; Interview by @ktauer; Styled by @thealexbadia)
