NEW YORK — Oscar de la Renta will be feted by Parsons the New School for Design in May.
The designer is to be honored at Parsons' 58th Annual Benefit and Fashion Show on May 8 at Pier Sixty at the Chelsea Piers. The evening will feature a fashion show of the top collections from this year's graduates, including one by Parsons' Designer of the Year.
"For 100 years, Parsons has been at the heart of American fashion, shaping the education of so many talented, aspiring designers," de la Renta, who launched his namesake label in 1965, said in a statement. "It is a great honor for me to receive this distinction and I look forward to meeting the class of 2006."
Previous honorees have been Marc Jacobs; Fred Wilson, former Saks Fifth Avenue chairman and chief executive officer; Paul Charron, Liz Claiborne Inc. chairman and ceo, and Sidney Kimmel, Jones Apparel Group's former chairman and ceo.
Parsons is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of its fashion program, which has produced designers Jacobs, Tom Ford, Donna Karan, Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Behnaz Sarafpour, Adrian, Claire McCardell and Norman Norell.
The gala, which is expected to attract 700 industry executives, raises funds for Parsons scholarships and academic programs.
