NEW YORK — It's already mid-July, which means this year's fat September issues will be shipping soon — pity the poor postmen who pull lat muscles every year delivering those hefty copies of Vogue.
July also means it's time for WWD's second annual preview of who's on the September covers of the women's and teen magazines. As expected, there are several pregnant stars on covers this year: Jennifer Garner will be hiding her bump on In Style for September, while a seven-months-pregnant Heidi Klum will be prominently displaying hers on Vitals Woman. Harper's Bazaar's September cover will feature Demi Moore, pregnant or not. But there's no sign of Britney Spears anywhere.
At the teen books, it's an almost clean sweep for TV stars, from Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson of "The O.C." to Nicole Richie, who graces Teen Vogue. Bilson is on two covers in September, Elle Girl and Lucky.
Once again this year, a number of cover subjects flip-flopped. Beyoncé Knowles' movie, "The Pink Panther," was pushed to February, so she was bumped from Vanity Fair's September cover, making room for Paris Hilton. Katie Holmes was slated to be on W's September cover, but, thanks to her TomKat transformation, she was moved up to August, displacing Jennifer Connelly, who's doing Glamour's September cover. Finally, Kirsten Dunst, originally scheduled for W's October issue, is now filling W's September slot.
Pity the poor celebrity bookers, who spend at least half of their workweek juggling and cajoling stars.
No one, though, is busier this season than photographer Michael Thompson, who found time to shoot three September covers: Mariah "the Good Kind of Crazy" Carey for Allure, Klum for Vitals Woman and Dunst for W. "I really don't keep track of what month a cover photograph is for," said Thompson. "I do, however, try to keep each magazine different as far as a look goes. Each magazine should have a signature look so that you would be able to identify the magazine without looking at the title."
Now pity the poor Thompson, who's been stuck in New York all summer for the shoots.
