NEW YORK — Max J. Garelick has been named president and chief executive officer of Perry Ellis International here, succeeding Claudia Thomas, who resigned last May.

Garelick will oversee all aspects of the company, which licenses the Perry Ellis name to 36 product categories. The firm discontinued its Perry Ellis designer and bridge sportswear collections in 1993.

Christopher Angell, vice chairman of the company, said, “We’re very interested in adding a women’s sportswear line, but we have no immediate plans for that.”

Garelick, who began at Ellis Monday, was president and ceo for six years of the North American subsidiary of Rodier Paris. Before that, he was a vice president at Ellen Tracy and earlier spent 10 years with the former Batus Retail Group, which owned Saks Fifth Avenue, Marshall Field’s and Gimbels.
