Philadelphia’s fashion retailers are doing their part to boost business by creating their own version of fashion week.

Slated for today through Saturday at the 23rd Street Armory in Center City, the event will feature runway shows, concerts, dance performances, cuisine from area chefs, and 12 pop-up boutiques including Cristina V, Delicious, iPearl and S. Love.

“Philadelphia Fashion Week is committed to supporting designers sold in our city,” said Michael Anderer, creative director of Philadelphia Fashion Week, partner of CMK Entertainment and head buyer for Matthew Izzo. “There will be runway shows of local designers like Commonwealth Proper, but because we wanted this event to be accessible for everyone — designers and guests — we opened up the criteria to any designer based or sold in our city.”

There will be at least 15 shows over the three days featuring holiday 2009 and spring 2010 designs from streetwear and contemporary labels including Commonwealth Proper, Triple 5 Soul, Wrath Arcane, Parke & Ronen, Brooklyn Royalty, Palmieri Jeans and Street Star Custom Clothing.

Several student designers from Philadelphia University, the Art Institute of Philadelphia and the Moore College of Art & Design will also be showcased. The students are competing for the inaugural Student Design Award, which will be presented by a representative from Macy’s on the final day of fashion week. Beginning Sept. 28, the windows of Macy’s Center City store will serve as a teaser for the award and the winning student’s designs will be featured in the windows from Oct. 13 to 16.

Tickets for the event are available to the public for $35 to $150.
