Grits aren’t the usual fare at the Phoenix Society, but they were served for the first time in ten years at the club’s “Grits at the Ritz” benefit for the Shepherd’s Spinal Center. They weren’t the only surprise on the menu. Normally a men’s organization, the Phoenix Society hosted the event for three generations of Atlanta women — past, present and future debutantes and their relations — who enjoyed a new red-wine-soaked variation on the classic Southern dish. The luncheon also featured a fashion show sponsored by Saks Fifth Avenue.

One of the oldest debs, Miss Nancy, who has been the chairwoman of the Society’s biannual ball for 42 years, lamented on the loss of femininity in fashion. “When I was young, we were taught to dance, dance, dance. Now, you can’t even find a ballgown.”
