BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Russell Schutte will join the Proffitt’s-McRae’s department store division of Saks Inc. on June 24 as senior vice president of stores, the corporation said Monday.

Schutte will report to Toni Browning, president and chief executive officer of the division, and will be based in its Alcoa, Tenn., headquarters. He succeeds Joseph Mahar who became a regional director of stores for the division.

Schutte, a 30-year veteran of retailing, has been senior vice president and regional director of stores for Burdines, the Miami-based division of Federated Department Stores since 1995. Between 1977 and 1995, he held various merchandising and store positions with May Department Stores Co., including regional vice president of stores for Robinsons-May in California. Schutte began his career at Gimbel’s.

Saks Inc. operates 243 department stores, including 26 Proffitt’s and 29 McRae’s, all located in the Southeast. The retailer also operates Parisian, Younkers, Herberger’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner’s and Boston Store, as well as the Saks Fifth Avenue chain.
