ATLANTA — Puma had a ground-breaking ceremony this week for its new Puma Plaza headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, the sports apparel and footwear lifestyle company’s hometown.

The 538,000 square-foot site will house a seven-story administration center for the central European hub, a new brand center and a new concept and factory outlet store. Puma expects construction to be finished at the end of 2009.

The three new buildings will form a space in the middle, creating the plaza. The brand center will exhibit innovative lifestyle collections in a presentation space of nearly 108,000 square feet.

On the energy conservation front, Puma plans a photovoltaic generating station on the roof of the outlet center, as well as solar modules to be integrated in the window front. Water will be partly heated by solar energy. Presence detectors will ensure energy conservation by turning out the light when an employee leaves his office. Concrete core temperature controls meet the highest ecological standards, Puma said, and will ensure sustainable heating and cooling.
