Those interested in Ralph Lauren's creative process can have an inside view in "Diary of a Collection." For the first time, Lauren has allowed insights into the creation of his fall 2005 collection, from conception to runway show. The book, which is available at Polo flagships in cities such as Manhattan, Beverly Hills, London, Milan and Paris, as well as on Polo.com, features a mélange of images, from mood boards to sketches, inspirational items, accessories and dresses. It ends with runway shots of the entire fall collection.
The text, in a handwritten script, is in Lauren's words, taken from an interview with the designer on the day of the presentation in February. "For me, a collection begins with a moment that provokes a dream that builds into a movie in my head," Lauren said. "I pick the star and the world she lives in and the rest follows — the shapes, the textures, the sophistication, the glamour."
The 100-page book is the first venture by Ralph Lauren Publishing, which was created about a year ago. It has an artistic feel and is covered in hand-painted canvas to resemble an artist's portfolio. There are only 3,000 numbered editions available, at $250 retail each. All profits from the book's sale go to the Polo Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Fund to aid the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention.
