NEW YORK — Is fashion retailing becoming hell on wheels?
For years certain retailers have been willing to take merchandise on consignment, or "on wheels," in industry jargon. But while retailers claim they aren’t selling on consignment any more than in the past — and much heavier in jewelry and furs than in ready-to-wear — the difficult retail climate is forcing them to come up with other little wrinkles to keep their inventories at a minimum.
