LOS ANGELES — Model and professional volleyball player Gabrielle Reece has teamed up with T-shirt maker Velvet to create a nine-piece collection of tops, called Velvet for Gabrielle Reece.
"The idea was to create pieces that go from workout to go-out," said Reece, who has been wearing Velvet since its inception nine years ago. Prices range from $49 for a camisole to $74 for a knotted-front long-sleeved top.
The collection comes in a range of bright colors that differs from Velvet's usual neutrals. It is the first collection that the Los Angeles-based company has produced with a celebrity.
"When I began to look into doing a line, it made sense to approach Velvet because it's authentic to me,'' said Reece, who also is a spokesmodel for Nike's performance gear. "Active leisure is realistic to who I am, since I don't have the opportunity to be really fancy at the moment."
Velvet owners Jenny Graham and Toni Spencer said they have been cautious about partnering with others on new collections. Velvet declined to give sales projections.
"We're dipping our toes in, but we hope this is around for a long time," said Graham, who has been friends with Reece since Velvet's inception.
The collection is available on Reece's health and fitness Web site, gotogabby.com, with retail distribution to follow. "Sometimes you exercise and you are stuck in what you are wearing all day long, so there is a need for pieces that look good in other spaces of your life," Reece said.
Next up, she is developing pants and packable dresses.

“I just wanted to create this fully rounded character, but I do think what excited me most was just the opportunity to give a group of people representation that I feel needs it. I like to do characters in projects that stand for something and Karolina definitely does, so that was really exciting to me,” @ginnygardner says of her new role in @hulu’s “The Runaways.” Gardner plays Karolina Dean, a queer superhero, which is a rarity for @marvel. “Azzedine has been one of the biggest influences in my life. He has always been such a strong, loving, fatherly figure to me. I call him Papa. His designs are indescribably unique, they are pieces of art. He knew how to make the female form look its loveliest. I have so many memories of him; my favorite might be during my first show with him in Paris. He liked me and he wanted to help me get more work. He called all his friends at Kenzo and Comme des Garcons, and asked them to book me. They said, ‘But she can’t walk!’ And he said, ‘but she has such a great ass!' His friendship and support has been the great privilege of my career. I can't imagine life without him. Repose en paix mon Papa.” - @stephanieseymour tells @wwd. #wwdfashion (📷: @steveeichner) #alaia #azzedinealaia
