Heavily lined eyes were rampant at New York Fashion Week, but at the Carmen Marc Valvo show Friday, boldly colored lips were the de rigueur feature.
The makeup team, led by Tom Pecheux for MAC Cosmetics, dutifully colored models’ lips with the Magenta Lip Pencil, followed by Russian Red Lipstick, which was applied to the middle of the lip and then blended to the corners.
Fellow MAC Cosmetics makeup artist John Stapleton declared, “It’s very Robert Palmer girl,” referencing the rows of red-lipped models with slicked-back hair in the singer’s “Simply Irresistible” video.
Faces looked clean with an even application of a skin-sculpting foundation (which MAC was testing backstage), bare eyes and gently sculpted brows. Speaking of the Robert Palmer girl, hairstylist Odile Gilbert for Redken created a sleek, slicked-back style. First using Redken Hardwear Gel, Odile parted hair to the side and formed it into widely set braids near the nape of the neck. Then she folded the braids together to mimic the look of a low-set barrette.
