NEW YORK — A couple shopping with their daughter for her wedding gown was shot during a robbery at the Vera Wang boutique on Madison Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

The couple, from Washington, D.C., was taken to New York Hospital, where they were listed in critical but stable condition. Their names are being withheld until relatives are notified.

The incident occurred just about 24 hours after robbers walked out of Bergdorf Goodman with a necklace said to be worth $670,000. Police do not believe the two crimes were related.

At Vera Wang, 991 Madison Ave. at 77th Street, both the man and woman were shot with what police said they believe to be a semiautomatic handgun after one of the gunmen demanded the woman’s diamond ring, estimated to be worth $60,000. The gunmen escaped with the ring.

Designer Vera Wang, who was not in the store when the shooting took place, said in a statement that she is terribly and deeply concerned about this unfortunate and shocking crime,” and is in touch with the hospital.

In a press briefing outside the boutique, Capt. William Roe of the New York City Police Department said two “well-dressed” white men entered the store at around 1:40 p.m., saying they wanted to shop for a wedding gown for a daughter. Shortly afterward, they put a gun to the back of the manager, and led her to the second floor. There they encountered the couple, their two daughters and three other employees. No other customers were in the store.

After demanding the wife’s ring, one gunman shot the woman once, and when her husband came to her aid, he was shot twice, said Roe. Following the shooting, the gunmen fled.

The robbery at Bergdorf’s was committed by a trio of neatly dressed men at about 1 p.m., according to police. Two of them distracted a sales associate while the third picked the lock of a jewelry case on the main floor and swiped the diamond and platinum necklace. The robbers were described as Hispanics in their 50s or 60s.
