Kate and Laura Mulleavy — the duo behind Rodarte — are capital-F fashion stars, staging one of New York Fashion Week’s most anticipated and exclusive runway shows. However, there was a time not too many seasons ago (fall 2005, to be exact) that the Mulleavys were unknowns, until WWD put their silk trench and satin dress on the cover of its Feb. 3, 2005 issue. “We can’t believe this is happening,” the Mulleavys told WWD in the accompanying profile. “We wanted to do something small and concentrated. Something bohemian and sophisticated,” explained Kate, who was 25 at the time. Their 10-piece collection included seven dresses and three coats, all meticulously constructed and featuring artsy details (for example, peacock feathers laced into black ribbon trim on a red silk dress). One of Rodarte’s early advocates, Decades Inc.’s Cameron Silver, told WWD why he thought these Californian sibs were destined for greatness: “They’re totally classy, sweet, somewhat nerdy girls. That’s a nice mix in fashion — nice and nerdy.”
