The Roosevelt Field mega-mall is getting two new high-profile anchors this fall: Bloomingdale’s Home and Galyan’s Trading Co., WWD has learned.

The two stores will carve up space from the former Stern’s store at the mall, located in Garden City, Long Island, with Bloomingdale’s taking 69,000 square feet and Galyan’s 100,000 square feet, sources said.

With the upcoming home store, Bloomingdale’s will be able to expand its apparel and accessories presentation at its existing department store in the mall.

Bloomingdale’s has been rolling out its upscale format for home goods. Last week, a four-story, 130,000-square-foot unit opened in the historic Medina Temple in downtown Chicago, and in the process, revitalized a city landmark and preserved the architecture. Last fall, Bloomingdale’s Home opened in Las Vegas, and home stores also operate in Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Newport Beach, Calif., Future home stores will be in Oakbrook, Ill., and Bridgewater, N.J. Bloomingdale’s officials couldn’t be reached late Thursday to discuss Roosevelt Field.

Galyan’s, known for its broad assortment of apparel, footwear and equipment for active lifestyles and for its rock-climbing walls, reportedly signed a letter of intent with mall owner Simon Property Group. Based in Columbus, Ohio, Galyan’s registered sales of $597.8 million last year. It has been steadily expanding, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest, though the 34-unit retailer operates some stores scattered in the South and West, such as Las Vegas, Dallas and Atlanta. Nine stores opened last year and another nine are expected this year, for a total of 43.

After Roosevelt Field, Galyan’s second-closest unit to the city will be the 100,000-square-foot store slated to open in Woodbridge, N.J., Aug. 29.

Robert Mang, chairman and chief executive of Galyan’s, declined to comment on the Roosevelt Field project, other than to say that the location “would be very viable for us.” Asked about operating stores closer to or in New York City, he replied, “Finding great locations at reasonable prices is like finding hens’ teeth.”

Mang did acknowledge that sites on Long Island, Connecticut and Westchester would be considered. Galyan’s most urban locations include Salt Lake City and Niles, Ill., a suburb of Chicago. In the state of New York, Galyan’s has two stores, in Buffalo and Rochester.

Galyan’s strategy is to open in suburban areas or smaller cities, where a large percentage of the population is engaged in such activities as hunting, camping, fishing and, of course, rock climbing. Stores sell equipment for more than 150 sports and outdoor activities in all, as well as footwear for hiking and other sporting activities, athletic apparel, outerwear and casual apparel. Its top brands are Nike, Adidas, The North Face, Columbia, Salomon and Shimano.

In 1946, Albert and Naomi Galyan opened the first Galyan’s store in Indianapolis, originally as a grocery store with some hardware and sports-related products. Years later, their son Pat took over the operations, and in the early Nineties, opened a unit in Columbus, Ohio, which caught the eye of Les Wexner, Limited Brands chairman and ceo. Limited purchased Galyan’s in 1995, expanded the business to 18 stores in seven markets and in 1999 sold it to Galyan’s management and Freeman Spogli & Co. In July 2001, Galyan’s became a public company registered on the Nasdaq.
