NEW YORK — Roots Canada Ltd. has signed a deal with Saks Inc. to open 52 concept shops within its Saks Department Store Group stores next month.The Toronto-based athletic-inspired Roots brand scored a major coup when it was picked to outfit the U.S. Olympic team at the opening and closing ceremonies in Salt Lake City this winter. The retailer and manufacturer will suit up the American and Canadian teams at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.Roots had more than 150 stores in Canada and the U.S., with sales this year projected to be $200 million to $250 million.The new shops will feature the brand’s women’s and men’s athletic-inspired sportswear, accessories and fragrances. Roots concept shops are being set up in 22 Carson Pirie Scott stores in the greater Chicago area; nine Parisian stores in Atlanta, Indianapolis and Detroit; eight Younkers stores in Iowa and Nebraska; four Herberger’s stores in Minneapolis; five McRae’s stores in Mississippi and Louisiana, and four Proffitt’s stores in Tennessee.
